Meet the Gypsies : Sam and Pete of Travelling King

1. Who are you?  Where are you from?  Where are you now?

Travelling King is Sam & Pete – husband and wife, who travel when they can! I (Sam) am originally from Zimbabwe in Africa and moved to Australia in 2000, Pete is from Adelaide Australia, we met in 2006 and have been inseparable since! Where are currently back home in Adelaide, we work full time and travel when we can.

2. What’s your packing strategy?  Heavy or light packer?  Suitcase or backpacker?

This is always an interesting question, I tend to “have a plan” when I came, of all the things we have to take, but then that snowballs to over packing – taking outfits I THINK I MIGHT wear – so our suitcases usually end up very heavy! Poor Pete has to lug them around – what a gentleman!

3. How do you afford your travels?  Budget traveler or lean more towards luxury?

Well “afford” is a good word hahah! Some would say we cant afford to travel – I laugh! We both work full time and still have a mortgage and all the fun things that come with it, so we save hard and we don’t go out as much as we used to, not to save money but because we are lazy! (and old!). I tried to be a budget travel, I desperately wanted to be a budget traveler but it just wasn’t in me, I’m a luxury traveler all the way – Pete comes along for the ride.

4. If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

That’s difficult! Its dependent on my mood, some days I would kill to go back to Thailand, other days I would kill to go to Europe and other days I would love to go to Canada or Japan to so snowboarding!

5. Is there anywhere you won’t travel to and why?

I’m not sure really, India has never really interested me so I guess I probably wouldn’t make a point to  travel there.

6. You have quite an impressive bucket list.  What are you looking forward to crossing off the most?

Thanks! ONE DAY I will visit Neuschwanstein Castle! I have always loved this castle and have found the history behind it interesting – the only thing that “pains me” is you are unable to take photographs in it!!!

7. What’s the most rewarding thing about traveling as a couple?  The most frustrating?

The most rewarding thing about travelling together is being able to experience things together and being able to be together without having to worry about work or mortgages! The most frustrating is Pete! (sorry buddy!), he is terrible at making decisions and always says “ I don’t mind” but im grateful that he lets me do “my thing” and plan our trips, I make sure that there are things in that he enjoys too – even if its not something I enjoy.

8. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve eaten?

Does caviar count (I kid!) … I’m not very adventurous so ill say Green Curry in Thailand that was “a little spicy” (aka bloody spicy!), so maybe pork balls on a stick – at least I think they were pork….

Pete is a little more adventurous and ate all sorts in Thailand, one I can remember was a little squid on a stick (I see a theme of everything I son a stick!).

9. How do you balance working full time and traveling?

Difficultly haha! Sometimes I need a holiday from my holiday! With the work we do (mostly Pete), the week can really take it out of you! We tried to do a few things on the weekend if there are events or things we want to see or do, we do try to go interstate every few weeks and usually plan for 1-2 large trips per year! It is by no means easy to juggle work, travel and blogging – its outright exhausting – like having 3 full time jobs!

10. Of the two of you, who’s the most adventurous traveler?

Well I guess that depends on your definition of “adventurous” – Pete would probably be more “adventurous” of the 2 of us, as he likes his extreme sports like Jet leving and motor biking etc he is also more open to trying new foods however I’m usually the one that has to get him off the hotel room couch to do these adventurous things and who plans them in advance – Pete is all about the relaxing!

11. Most importantly, where to next?

Well this year will be interesting! We are off to Sydney in a few weeks for the weekend, might throw in a trip to Melbourne in a few weeks and then we are going to visit some family and check out Perth over the next few months.  Hopefully travelling to Kangaroo Island this year – we have both been before however not together. Then in June or July we will head up to the ski “mountains” in Victoria or New South Wales for a week or 2 of snowboarding! Then in October we will be taking a 3 week trip – 1 week in Beijing China, 5 days in Singapore or KL and then the remaining time we are debating between the Maldives, Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia! (its difficult to narrow down!!)

Hi guys, great to meet some fellow travellers who also have to juggle day jobs (and blogging!) around their trips. Looking forward to following your adventures. And thanks for doing the interviews Ashley, great way to discover like-minded souls.

Always love reading this great interview series Ashley! Nice to meet you Sam and Pete. Particularly interested in your upcoming travel plans and reading about your experiences in all these amazing places you intend on heading to. I think you have a really tough decision ahead of you with your 3 week trip, if you are looking for beach and ultimate relaxation then I think you would be well advised to opt for the Maldives but then again there is so much culture and probably more things to do with your other alternatives.

Envious to hear about where you decide to go!

Always great to see couples doing what they love together even with a bit of give and take (that’s what relationships are all about) and it’s amazing you have found your perfect dynamic to make it work.
