Photo Essay: Nashville Zoo at Grassmere

By  |  26 Comments

If you’re in the Nashville area and looking for something fun to do, especially with children, you should check out the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere.  While it’s not the best zoo, it still has very nice exhibits and a great range of animals to see.  A lot of construction has gone into the zoo in the past several years and it has definitely changed for the better.  Living in the area, I’ve been more times than I can count in my life.  Here are some of my photos from my most recent trip.

Like most, the Nashville Zoo has a petting area which includes several animals, but mostly these adorable goats. They were feeling particulary rambunctious this day.

Inside the zoo, is the Grassmere Historic Home and Farm and here they have farm animals for visitors to see and interact with.

Do you enjoy visiting zoos? What’s the best one you’ve ever been to?  Which of these is your favorite animal?

WOW, what great photos. You you managed to get some kick ass photos that would make great photos for wall art! I have pinned if that’s okay.

I was convinced my favorite photo was the shot of the elephant calf with the tree. I kept scrolling and the ones with the giraffe calf was my favorite, then it was the one with the zebra, then the leopard in the tree. There are too many great shots here to pick just one fav! Great job.

Thanks Adelina! I’ve printed the giraffe and leopard ones and have them up in my house so I guess they are my favorite too 🙂

I love zoos! I was raised near the St Louis zoo, which is still one of my favorites. I believe it’s still the last free zoo in the country. The clouded leopard staring and the flamingos are both striking photos. Love them especially! I will definitely check out the Nashville zoo next time I’m in the area. Thanks so much!

I know the St Louis zoo is free which is pretty awesome. I have not been there yet though. Thanks for your lovely comments! 🙂

You have some beautiful shots of the animals here – I love the little giraffe! And omg, those goats are so cute. All zoos should have a petting area.

I just wanted to pick one of those goats up and take it with me, but then realized he would need a buddy and stealing two seemed harder than one 🙂

Wow what great photos – the Clouded Leopard shots are amazing! Are the shots through glass or are the exhibits just set up so you can get clear vies to the animals? We love going to the Calgary Zoo and the Vancouver Aquarium when we are back home. Probably our favorite was at the Wild Animal Park in San Diego with it’s huge, natural-feeling spaces!

Thanks Travis! There was some netting or fence but no glass thank goodness! I really really want to go to the San Diego zoo and the Wild Animal Park there! Jealous you’ve been 🙂

OK, I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of zoos – mostly because I’ve seen quite a few shady ones in my time, and have been fortunate enough to see many of the animals displayed here in their natural habitat. Still, your photos are gorgeous! The clouded leopard is a particular highlight. Great job, Ashley! Good luck!

Thanks! While I’m definitely a fan of seeing them in the wild over captivity, it’s hard for me to say no to anything to do with animals. I hope to see many of these in the wild in the near future! 🙂

Thanks Anna! That’s a shame that you don’t go because of that. I’m weird and love snakes–I’ve had about five of my own. However, I’m terrified of spiders so I can kind of relate haha.

Beautiful pictures the first one reminds me that Rio 2 is coming out soon and I am more excited than the kids lol. I have to take my youngest to the zoo she has never been and she would love it that might be her birthday present now that I think about it.
