Travel Movie of the Week : Lost in Translation

For this week’s inspiration, I watched Lost in Translation.  Don’t judge, but this was the first time I’d ever watched this movie.  I’m glad I finally did because I really enjoyed it.

Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation

The movie is about two Americans both in Japan who grow an unexplained bond between them.  Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a middle-aged actor there doing commercials for a whiskey.  Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is a Yale graduate who came along with her photographer husband who is there on business.  Charlotte’s husband, John, is very preoccupied with his career and she doesn’t feel like she is getting the attention she deserves, while Bob’s 25-year marriage is going through a major rut.

They bond over their loneliness, insomnia and culture shock.  While there is a lot of heavy themes in this film, it’s still laced with humor.  Going from one spectrum to the other on the culture scale can be a shock for anyone and this film showcases that.  While the film first begins with a little close-mindedness on the main characters’ part, it gradually slows how through the bond they share they start to accept and embrace it.

In my opinion, even the most traveled of us can still experience culture shock or times when things do get “lost in translation.”

Bill Murray is so excellent. I like how it isn’t a romance between Bob & Charlotte, but a multi-layered friendship laced with non-sexual intimacy. Great showcase for Tokyo. I have 2 friends in Tokyo, have a place to stay, will get there someday!

That’s what I liked about it too…it wasn’t just two people who had an affair, they actually had a deep connection. Never would of thought Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson would have great chemistry haha.
