Wednesday Wanderlust: South Africa

By  |  24 Comments

WEDNESDAY

I’ve been putting off South Africa in my wanderlust series because it is one of my top dream destinations, if not the top one.  I’ve always felt a strong connection to Africa even though I’ve never been and I have a very good feeling that once I actually make it there, I won’t be leaving quickly.  So, I’ve stopped putting it off and have put together some of the things I’m looking forward to seeing and doing once I finally make it to South Africa:

Storms River

storms river, south africa

Storms River is located on the coast and is home to an awesome looking footbridge and the Tsitsikamma Forest.

Kruger National Park

Out for a stroll.

If Africa is my dream destination, then a safari is my dream adventure.  Kruger is Africa’s oldest established wildlife park and includes the “Big Five” – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and cape buffalo – as well as hippos (AHHH!-mild obsession), crocodiles, giraffes, cheetahs and many more.

Ride an Ostrich

I would love to head to Oudtshoorn to the Safari Ostrich Show Farm where ostriches can be seen in their natural habitat and of course, so I can look absolutely ridiculous while riding one.

Croc Diving

Besides riding an ostrich, what else can I do in Oudtshoorn??  Get in the water with a crocodile, of course!

Backpack the Wild Coast

The Wild Coast is a desolate, spectacular region along the coastline.  I would love to backpack this region.  There’s so much to do from horseback riding, hiking, and surfing – I say that like I actually know how to surf – while staying in a family home or a hostel at night.

Amatola Forest, Hogsback

The Amatola Forest in Hogsback is the location that supposedly inspired Tolkein.  That’s a good enough reason for me to visit right there!

Great White Shark Cage Diving

GREAT WHITE SHARK - GANSBAAI, SOUTH AFRICA 2003

He (or she) looks hungry!  Sharks have always fascinated me, and a lot of other people I’m sure or we wouldn’t have an entire week of television devoted to them.  Cage diving with great white sharks is in the top animal adventures I absolutely must to do and South Africa is one of the best places to do it.

Basically, I just want to get in the water with a bunch of animals that could kill me and see some awesome scenery.  Sounds about right.

Would you want to see or do any of these things in South Africa?  What else would you add to the list?

Awesome list you have here Ashley! Now whether or not I would have the guts to go through with any of these, I don’t know but I have to admit that these look like pretty cool experiences. Anyone that wants to overcome their fears would be well suited to any or all of these adventures.

One thing that I would like to do is the safari experience in Kruger National Park. This is one of the items on our South African bucket list. We almost made it there last year for our honeymoon but opted for Australia instead so hopefully we will venture there sometime soon.

    Great post and pictures Ashley!

Wow! You have clearly spent time researching this country. I can imagine riding an Ostrich would be highly amusing and would be something that I would attempt to do but I am not sure about the white sharks – bit of a wimp where these things are concerned! 🙂

Awww come on Tamason…the ostrich riding might prove to be more dangerous 😀

I’m right on board (or overboard where applicable) on so many of these. South Africa has so many things great adventures to offer.

Personally, as a diver, being around for the sardine rush and getting into the water at such a time seems absolutely fascinating… but Shark Diving and Croc Diving are right up there on that list as well, and who can argue with Kruger?!

Great list, and great country to pick for you’re most lustful moments 😉

I’m sure you’ll get there someday, and we’ll all be looking forward to hearing about it

South Africa is super high on my list too! And I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who is crazy enough to want to try cage diving! 😀 Didn’t know you could ride an Ostrich…that sounds intriguing!

Yay, for someone else as crazy as me! I need to do more research on the ostrich riding – it’s completely normal there, but I wonder how humane it is.

Great list about places in a country that I would really love to visit once! I am not sure I would be brave enough for the shark cage diving, but who knows?:)

Aw, South Africa is definitely on my bucket list too!
My father has stayed there for some months for his work, and he’s taken back home amazing pictures and memories.
I would also bound to go there for work some years ago, but then unfortunately we didn’t get the project.
Well, I’ll go there for leisure, so I’ll have more time to see all these amazing places!!
